Breath work: Quick Recap

Breathwork is the intentional practice of changing your breathing patterns to improve mental, emotional, & physical health. The term itself came into popular use in the 1970s, with pioneers like Stanislav Grof introducing holotropic breathwork—a method aimed at self-exploration through intense breathing sessions. But long before the West coined the term, breath regulation was deeply embedded in ancient traditions like pranayama from yoga & Taoist breathing practices from China. Breathwork has long been recognised as a form of traditional medicine, integral to healing systems across cultures. These practices are rooted in the natural rhythms on earth, drawing on holistic approaches to health & longevity.
Across cultures, the breath has always been seen as more than just oxygen exchange. In Sanskrit, “prana” means life force. In Chinese philosophy, “qi” flows through breath. This shows how, for millennia, people have understood breath as the bridge between body & mind. Breathwork traditions incorporate various tool—such as rhythm, depth, & visual focus points—that together enhance the effectiveness of each training.
In our modern world, however, most of us breathe poorly—shallow, fast, & often unconsciously. This directly affects how we feel, think, & act. Controlled breathing can help us switch from reactive to responsive, anxious to grounded, foggy to focused. Breathwork is receiving a lot of attention in today’s wellness & scientific communities, as more people recognise its benefits.
There’s an old saying: “If you can control your breath, you can control your life.” The order & structure of breathwork training are essential for achieving the desired outcomes, ensuring each session is both safe & effective.
And at the heart of Neuroscope® Breathworks is that very idea—helping you take back control of your breath, so you can take back control of how you go through life. Each breathwork session offers a chance for personal transformation & improved sense of wellness.
Introduction to Breathwork & Well Being

Breathwork is the most accessible tools to enhance overall well-being. It not only calms the mind but deeply supports physiological processes that keep us healthy & thriving.
Scientific benefits of breathwork include:
- Reduced cortisol (stress hormone) levels
- Lower blood pressure & heart rate
- Improved oxygen delivery to cells & tissues
- Enhanced vagal tone for nervous system regulation
- Increased heart rate variability (HRV) – a marker for resilience
- Better sleep quality & reduced insomnia
- Decreased symptoms of anxiety & depression
- Strengthened immune function
- Enhanced cognitive & physical performance through regular practice
Incorporating breathwork regularly helps us reconnect with our body’s natural rhythms. It invites us to pause, reflect, & respond—rather than react. Breathwork supports each individual’s unique path to well being, allowing for a personalised approach to health. These approaches can also improve attention & mental clarity, helping you stay focused & present. As a daily or weekly habit, breathwork becomes a powerful anchor to support clarity, health, & joy.
How the Eyes Play a Vital Role in Relaxation

When it comes to stress reduction, the eyes are more powerful than we realise. Our visual system is the highest in the sensory hierarchy—understanding that it plays a primary role in how we interpret & respond to the world.
Every second, our brain receives visual cues that signal whether we are safe or in danger. This affects our breathing patterns, heart rate, & muscular tension. However, sometimes our eyes are seeing something different from what is actually happening. For instance, being glued to screens for hours or focusing on intense content can send constant signals of urgency or alarm to the brain—even when we’re sitting in a safe, calm space. This mismatch creates a hidden tension in the nervous system.
We may feel relaxed, but our nervous system is on alert.
This internal conflict, where the body & brain are out of sync, contributes to stress, anxiety, & a sense of unease—without us even realising it.
Why this matters for relaxation:
- Softening your gaze (peripheral vision) can help shift your body into a parasympathetic state (rest & digest)
- Narrow or tunnel vision is associated with stress, urgency, & danger
- Eye position changes brain activity & can immediately reduce tension in the nervous system
- Practising slow eye movements with breathing helps release mental tension, supports focus, & reduces anxiety
Neuroscope® Breathworks incorporates specific visual elements, such as guided eye movements and fixation points, as key elements to enhance mental clarity and emotional integration through a combined psycho-physiological approach.
By training the eyes alongside the breath in Neuroscope® Breathworks, we give the brain clearer signals that everything is okay. These practices help synchronize brain functions, activate attention systems, and enhance cognitive focus, opening the door for deeper states of calm & improved self-regulation.
